It provided support for the invasion fleet heading to Iwo Jima with her main guns. It attacked the Japanese mainland from the Inland Sea, shooting down four of their aircraft. The Missouri also bombarded the shores of Okinawa as a prelude to the invasion. The ship later made raids on the Japanese home islands. The Missouri saw action during the Korean War from 1950-1955. Thirty years later, the ship was updated and re-commissioned in San Francisco. It took part in the Gulf War and served as a museum ship for the past fourteen years until President Patterson ordered it re-commissioned.
