Rick Patterson may seem cold and uninviting at times, but beneath his tough guy exterior is a sensitive heart. People who know him will tell you that he’s not the kind of guy you’d want to cross ( and he isn’t ), but he remembers each and every person who’s shown him kindness–and he always makes it worth their while. You buy Rick a drink, he’ll buy you two–you spit in his face, you’d best skip town. Rick isn’t a violent person generally, but if someone were to pick a fight with him he’d hold his own–and win. Rick isn’t afraid of anyone. Perhaps that was why he was kicked out of school in his youth.
Rick does have a sensitive side, and he can be very generous. While most people would pass by a homeless man on the street, Rick would give him 10 bucks and the coat off his back. With that being said, Rick doesn’t make a big deal out of his good deeds. Usually, they’re done in secret. For example, when he was working in New York as a young lawyer, an acquaintance of his was laid off. The next day the man received an anonymous check for $10,000. If you asked him, Rick would deny that he had anything to do with it but the acquaintance and Rick’s friends will tell you that it was Rick.
Patterson is very intelligent, though in grade school he was an underachiever and a prankster. He eventually grew up, however, and utilized his mind to work towards becoming a lawyer. He accomplished his goal, becoming the richest man in New York State. He enjoys reading and playing chess in his spare time, and is also an avid golfer. He’s very athletic and loves to play other sports such as baseball, basketball, and tennis to blow off steam, but his true passion is sailing. Patterson loves the sea almost as much as he loves his wife.
Rick can be really cynical sometimes, and he doesn’t always trust people right off the bat. If you want him to trust you, you must earn his trust. In truth, the only person he completely trusts is himself. He carries a revolver with him at all times for protection. His parents always said he was born a cynic, but others suspect that he developed a sarcastic and negative world view as a result of his experiences serving in the Navy. The First Lady can confirm that he still suffers from nightmares that reiterate what happened some twenty years ago.
Patterson, as a politician, is moderate. His first and foremost concern is the people and their welfare, and does everything within his constitutional power to ensure their safety and well-being. He valiantly fights against social injustices, determined to protect the rights of the people. His biggest goal is to strengthen the national defense before poking his head into the rest of the world’s business. He’s very nationalistic, firmly believing that America is and always will be the greatest country in the world, and stresses that he is willing to do whatever it takes to defend his homeland, even if it means going to war. Patterson is not for attacking other nations unless those nations attack the United States first. Only then will he strike back without hesitation. His party members disagree with some of his views on foreign policy, but he has won some support across the party lines.
Character History (What has your characters life been like? What has he/she appomplished?):
Richard Timothy Patterson was born on October 22nd,1983 in New York City. The son of a wealthy banker was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps, but ever since a boating trip when Rick was five years old, he wanted to be a sailor. Patterson Senior wasn’t very supportive of this idea, so Rick was educated at a fancy boarding school in Pennsylvania. However, this didn’t last long. He was soon expelled for a series of actions worthy of demerits such as releasing frogs in the teachers’ lounge, sabotaging the bathrooms, getting into fistfights, and making midnight raids to the school’s kitchen. Rick had found the school quite boring, and carried out his wild agenda to liven the place up. He wasn’t too disappointed when he was kicked out, however the boy’s father was furious. He told Rick to get his act together or else he’d send him to military school.
His parents found him a preparatory school in the suburbs of New York, and Rick enrolled when he was 11. He learned his lesson from his experiences in Pennsylvania, but young Patterson just couldn’t keep up with his grades. It wasn’t that he didn’t understand the curriculum, but he was just a bad student. He was unmotivated to do his homework. He felt that there was no point to it, and classroom lectures put him to sleep. When Patterson’s father found out he was making C’s, D’s, and one F, he was livid. Instead of threatening to send him to military school, he threatened to disinherit the boy and have nothing to do with him for the rest of his life. Rick got the message, and slowly but steadily his grades improved.
Rick played many sports in high school including baseball, football, and soccer. Then he was a bit more sociable than he was later in life, so he had a lot of close friends during his teenage years. He graduated with honors in June of 2001. The day after September 11th, he joined the United States Navy. After completing his training and achieving the rank of seaman, he was deployed to Iraq.
During the following decade, Rick served four tours of duty in the Middle East, and earned the rank of Petty Officer before being reassigned to a military base in France. It was then that he met his future wife, Isabelle, who was a college student from Norway. The two began dating, and in May of 2008 they married.
Soon after, Rick was granted an honorable discharge from the Navy. He and his wife went home to America, and set up house in New York City. Patterson used his GI bill money to go to Harvard. He was older than most of the other students, but he was able to keep up his grades. On weekends he’d take the train back home to see Isabelle. In his senior year, he became a father. Rick and Isabelle named their son Henry. Rick and Isabelle would have two more children in 2018, twin girls--Anna Marie and Charlotte.
After graduating, Rick enrolled in Harvard Law School. His father, whom he hadn’t spoken to since he joined the Navy, ( Mr. Patterson had been completely against it, insisting that his son was “throwing his life away” ) called him up to congratulate him. He told him that he was very proud of his son, and that he loved him and believed that he’d make a wonderful lawyer. This nearly brought tears to Rick’s eyes. He and his father have been close ever since.
When Rick graduated from law school, he found a job at a firm in New York. He took on a number of criminal cases, as well as a few civil lawsuits. Rick proved to be a skillful attorney–he was always able to win money for his clients, who would recommend Rick to the people they knew. He became very well-known as time went by, and soon he decided to set up his own practice.
By his mid-thirties, Rick was the richest man in the state. The New York Times christened him “The King of New York” and it was said that he was the #1 lawyer in the city. Everyone came to Rick. His firm dealt in criminal law, labor law, injury law, and property law. He was also deeply involved in politics, first serving 2 terms as a congressman for New York in the House of Representatives, and then serving a term as a senator.
When Eisenhower Jr.’s term was up, Rick’s colleagues nominated him as the Democratic candidate for President. Patterson was surprised and overwhelmed. He knew what was going on in Europe and he didn’t want that to come to America. Rick decided to accept the nomination and ran on the campaign promise that he would protect America’s borders and ensure that Americans would continue to live comfortably in peace. Shocking and even angering some of his party members, Patterson chose none other than Ike Jr himself as his running mate.
Some would ask why a Democrat would choose the former Republican President as a running mate. Rick would answer that firstly it is a good political move. Ike Jr was well-loved by the people–by endorsing him as his running mate, he could gain the people’s votes. Secondly, Rick knew that he wasn’t very experienced, and having a seasoned politician as his running mate and, with luck, Vice President, would be to his advantage.
His intuition proved right. Whether it was his charismatic persona as the young champion of the workingman and the patriotic guardian of justice, or his choice of a running mate that got him elected, he didn’t know–but he and the whole country knew that he’d won by a landslide. The newly-elected President Patterson was one of the youngest Presidents in the nation’s history. Now, Rick would have to somehow prevent the United States from being devastated by a third World War...
